Kafka’s “The Castle” at Deutsches Theater Berlin

It was hard work for everyone to stage Kafka’s novel “The castle” ; for director Nurkan Erpulatand his advisor Jens Hillje, the fantastic actors including Moritz Grove, Sesede Terziyan and Katharina Matz, as well as my composer-collegue Tobias Schwenke and me.  The music is twofold and consists of dark soundscapes that capture the disturbing and oppressive atmosphere of the piece and songs by the doors sung live by a children’s choir, which adds a sincere absurdity. I produced the soundscapes, recorded the accompaniment and arranged the songs together with Tobias.

Sound design for “Sorori”

The work for Ulrike Ruf’s experimental music theatre piece “Sorori” was probably my most intense collaboration so far. Based solely on the diary entries and the multimedia estate of a young girl who committed suicide, the piece portrays her coming-of-age during the early post-reunification time in Berlin. Working together with a composer, a video artist and a set designer, we tried to follow the young girl’s search for herself. Using old mixtapes, private recordings and pre-recorded diary entries, I created a 8-channel audio installation that was mixed live to the performance of the well-known choir Vocalconsort.

Kafka’s “The castle” premiered at Ruhrtriennale in Bochum

After a couple of intense rehearsal-weeks, Nurkan Erpulat’s and Jens Hillje’s theatre version of “The castle” by Franz Kafka premiered at the Turbinenhalle in Bochum. Together with Tobias Schwenke, I was responsible for the music (songs by “The doors” sung by a children’s choir) and the sound design.

Sound Design for “Cold Star”

How turn a swimming pool scene into a surreal, dream-like episode? Use  sound design, slow-motion and editing as Kai Stänickes does in his music clip “Cold Star”. The film won the Public Choice Award “Made in Germany” of the “Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage Hamburg” and was awarded the “Prädikat:besonders wertvoll”.

Singers wanted for “Sorori”

I’ve just started to work on Ulrike Ruf’s music theatre performance “Sorori”, which will be shown in November in Berlin. It is based on diary texts, music recordings and films from the estate of a young woman from Berlin who committed suicide in the 90s and will feature Vocalconsort Berlin combined with amateur singers, a surround sound loudspeaker setup and video. We’re still looking for adventurous singers who want to take part in the performance. Please contact me via e-mail if you’re interested.

Music and Sound for “Je suis tombé sur tois”

The dance theatre piece “je suis tombé sur tois” by choreographer Helge Letonja was produced for the festivals “KoresponDance Europe” and “Norddeutsches Tanztreffen”. It premiered at “Neues Schauspielhaus Bremen” and was performed at the “Nu Dance” festival in Bratislava. It will tour serveral European cities including Paris, Prague and Brno.
Throughout the piece my soundtrack shifts beween music and sound. The music seems to emerge from soundscapes and dissolves back into them.
